Data Scientifique is central to a university-wide initiative to develop the capacity for data science and analytics research at Concordia.

Housed in the PERFORM Centre, our mission is to help researchers learn and incorporate the cutting edge in computation and programming techniques in their work and facilitate knowledge translation.
We help researchers leverage advances in analytics and other quantitative methodologies by providing technical expertise inclduing a drop-in, educational programs such as workshops, and additional resources including financial support

We hold weekly drop-in on
Thursdays between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM in our Data Scientifique Office at the PERFORM Centre in PC 2.302.

If you can't make it the weekly drop-in, feel free to contact us at data.science@concordia.ca to set up an appointment!

PERFORM DATA SCIENTIFIQUE ENRICHMENT AWARD

Data Scientifique is soliciting applications for a newly-minted competitive award for promising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at the nexus of data science and preventative health. The PERFORM Centre Data Science Award is provides financial support (of up to $1,000) for awardees to attend events, workshops, or conferences to (1) develop technical skills in one of the four areas of computational and data sciences (i.e., statistics, programming, data management, data visualization) or (2) present research on preventative health and health policy using computational techniques.

Ideal candidates will come from technical disciplines (e.g.,  computer science) with interest in topics related to health or domain-specific degree programs (e.g., psychology) interesting in further developing technical skillsets.

Workshop Series

Upcoming Workshop Schedule

Introduction to Statistical Programming with R
R is rapidly becoming the leading language in data science and statistics. Today, R is the tool of choice for data science professionals in every industry and field. Whether you are full-time number cruncher, or just the occasional data analyst, R will suit your needs. This introduction to R programming requires no previous experience and is aimed at helping workshop participants to master the basics of R.

Research Synthesis (Meta-Analyses)
This workshop focuses on the practical “how to” of research synthesis. Preventive health research, like many disciplines, has a body of empirical research that is growing rapidly. Over the last four decades, a class of data science aggregation and statistical methods has been developed to systematically and reproducibly synthesize the state of the art for a particular research question. These methods are commonly incorporated under the terms research synthesis or meta-analysis. Research syntheses are used to derive an estimate of an overall effect size, and include a detailed moderator analyses with respect to the diversity and sensitivity of results. Workshop participants will learn how to formulate a research question, search and evaluate the literature, how to extract and code data, and how to analyze and interpret meta-analytic models
